Carr is trying to show in his chapter, “Passenger,” that their needs to be points in innovation where people need to think about if they really should do something because it could result in loss of labor and an increase in laziness. He backs up his point first with his personal anecdote of his first car. The entire time he uses a manual transmission car he wishes that he could upgrade to a car with an auto transmission and once he gets a car with automatic shift, he misses the work he had to do with the manual shift. With the automatic, he feels like the “passenger” because of the lack of work he has to put into driving compared to when he used manual shift. Along with his personal anecdote, Carr pushes his point further with the “the paradox of work” that explains the wishing for something better but the longing for what someone had once it’s lost, which supports his personal anecdote and inquiry. On page eight in the chapter, Carr questions who would take blame for crashes between automation vehicles, which supports his inquiry because it causes the reader to actually think and question more about this and other future innovations. In my own opinion, if it were up to me, the blame would be with the car owner because they themselves put their own trust into giving this controversial machine the responsibility of the task. Overall, Carr’s tone in the piece is not negative toward innovation and progression of modern technology; it is more just a tone of caution to what we as mankind are doing. The tone used is ideal for this piece because it is not trying to beat down the innovation of automation or other future innovations, but more so trying to warn readers of what will be lost and missed when people get too comfortable. His tone in both this chapter and his Google article are comparable because they both weigh toward the cautionary side about the advancement and overuse of technology. All in all, the piece was a terrific inquiry that is relatable and relevant to current events and an overall great example of an exceptional inquiry.
